The G2 reviewer didn't sand the line. She wrote it the way she felt it. "Marketers don't need more dashboards. They need smarter decisions." The quote sits in a 2026 G2 review of Revlitix, but it could be the headline for the entire mid-market marketing-tech category.
Most marketing dashboards are decorated spreadsheets. They're tables of numbers in a friendlier wrapper. Bar charts. Line charts. KPI tiles in three or four colors. The data is real. The labels are correct. The arithmetic checks out. And on a Friday afternoon, when the CFO asks "Are we getting our money's worth on the agency?", the dashboard does not answer.
That's the gap this piece is about.
What dashboards do well, and where they stop
Dashboards are good at three things: aggregating signals from multiple data sources, rendering them in a shape humans can scan, and updating them on a schedule. That's the job. They do it well.
The reason they don't help you decide is that the work of deciding sits on top of the dashboard, not inside it. The dashboard tells you cost per acquisition was $187 in May. The decision is whether $187 is good. Whether it's better than April. Whether it's bad enough to move budget away from Meta. Whether the move-the-budget call should wait until you see June. Whether the fact that LTV ticked up in the same period offsets the rise in CAC.
None of that lives in the dashboard. It lives in your head, or in the head of whichever consultant you're paying $300 an hour to help you read your own data.
This is what the G2 reviewer meant. The dashboard generation built better and better aggregation. It did not build the layer above aggregation. The decision-making layer.
The three layers most dashboards miss
Every analyst who has ever read a marketing dashboard ends up doing the same three things in their head. Most products don't do those three things for you. They make you do them. That's the gap.
Layer one: context
A number alone is meaningless. CAC of $187 is good if your average historical CAC is $240. It's a problem if your CAC has been $140 for the last six quarters. Context is the comparison set that turns a number into a signal.
Most dashboards show you the number and a tiny green-or-red arrow next to it. The arrow compares to the previous period. That's a one-dimensional view of context. Real context is multi-dimensional: this period vs. last period, this segment vs. other segments, this channel vs. other channels, this brand vs. industry benchmarks, this metric vs. its own historical variance.
Context-rich answers say "$187 is up 18% from May, which puts it in the top decile of monthly variance you've seen in the last 18 months. The previous time CAC moved this much, it was Meta's iOS 17 attribution change, not a real efficiency change. Worth investigating before you move budget."
The dashboard doesn't say that. The dashboard shows you $187 with a red arrow.
Layer two: narrative
Numbers in tables are facts. Narrative is the causal explanation that connects a fact to a story you can tell the CFO. Without narrative, you walk into Tuesday's QBR with five tabs open and the CFO already has questions.
Narrative answers say "CAC is up 18% because Meta CAC specifically moved 27% — the rest of the channel mix held flat. Meta CAC moved because they changed the optimization signal away from purchases and toward visits, and we adjusted slowly. We've already shifted budget toward LinkedIn ABM, which has a longer payback but better fit. Expect CAC to settle by mid-June."
The dashboard doesn't say that either. The dashboard shows you a stack of red arrows.
Layer three: action
The third layer is the one most marketing leaders never see in product form: what should I do about this? Action is the recommendation that turns the narrative into a decision the marketing leader can either accept or override.
Action answers say "Three options. One: hold the line on Meta and let CAC settle naturally — recovers in 4-6 weeks, costs you another $40K in inefficient spend. Two: shift 30% of Meta budget to LinkedIn ABM — front-loads the LTV curve but kills the brand-impression mix this quarter. Three: pause Meta entirely for two weeks and reallocate to retargeting — recovers fastest but burns the audience. Mark recommends option two. Approve, decline, or ask a follow-up."
The dashboard doesn't recommend anything. The dashboard is a passive tool. Your strategist is the one who turns the dashboard into action, and they only do it on the call. Between the calls, the dashboard is decoration.
What "decision intelligence" actually means
The phrase "decision intelligence" gets thrown around. It's worth being precise about what it should mean.
A decision intelligence layer answers questions of the data, with citations, in language a non-analyst can take into a CFO meeting. It carries context, narrative, and a recommendation in the same surface. It cites its sources so the human can verify before they act on it. It improves with feedback because every accepted recommendation becomes a labeled training example for the next one.
It's not a chatbot bolted onto a dashboard. A chatbot bolted onto a dashboard is a search bar for the data that already wasn't helping you decide. The decision intelligence layer is the surface above the dashboard, where the human reads the synthesis instead of doing it themselves.

The work behind it is the decision intelligence layer: knowing that "CAC" maps to "capital efficiency," that "ROAS" maps to "return on capital," that "channel attribution" maps to "portfolio allocation." That mapping is judgment. It's the kind of judgment your fractional CMO or your strategy lead spends their hours doing in their head before the call.
Pulling that judgment into the surface itself is what turns a dashboard into a decision intelligence tool. The judgment is the product.
What this means for the next 18 months
The dashboard generation is over. The next category of marketing software is the decision intelligence layer that sits on top of dashboards and tells you what to do about them. The category is being built right now, mostly by AI-native players like Suits.ai, by reframed analytics tools like Revlitix, and by operator agencies who realized that the surface they wished their clients had didn't exist.
Dashboards aren't going away. They're becoming a layer underneath, the way databases became a layer underneath analytics tools. The thing your team opens on Monday morning is not the dashboard anymore. It's the decision intelligence surface that reads from dashboards and tells you what shipped, what changed, what's worth your attention, and what to do about it.
